It's WRONG to Separate Families!

We know we have talked about this already, but it’s so shocking, we need to talk about it again.

The WH policy of separating children from their parents to discourage illegal travel to the US is unjustifiable, unacceptable and inhumane.

There are many different numbers being quoted, but the ACLU has said that over 1,000 children have been taken from their families in the last month alone. The parents don’t know where their children are, when they will see them again, or if their children will accompany them should they (the parents) be deported.

This practice of separating children from their parents  is deeply traumatic for the families and will have a long-lasting impact on the children, many of whom have already experienced horrors in their own country and on their journey to the US border.  It must be stopped. Even the UN is wading in on the subject!

It seems quite clear that the adults who are enacting a Zero Tolerance policy at our borders are not remembering what it is like to be a child. How many of us have memories of our parents suddenly disappearing in a grocery store and the temporary terror we felt? Not only is the terror these children experience at the border not temporary, these children have no way of knowing if and when they are ever going to see their parents again. As the Trump administration defends this separation policy, there is no mention of the impact this has on the children themselves. It appears that the only way to justify this policy is to completely disconnect from either one or both of the following realities: that these are children; and that children are affected by what happens to them.

Listen to Sen. Jeff Merkley talking about what he saw at the detention centers for the children separated from their families and the trauma that this experience inflicts on them.

So, what can you do?

Contact your US Senator and Representative TODAY and urge them to do everything they can to stop this inhumane policy and deeply damaging treatment of children and their families, many of whom are seeking asylum from horrific situations elsewhere. Here is a script from ACLU to help you.
