Pre-March Rally at Western Sculpture Park

Western Sculpture Park will serve as the gathering location for the 2019 MN Women’s Wave march. Although the park is easily accessed by sidewalks, transit and nearby parking; it is bordered by private residences/property on the north, south and western edges. Please support our efforts of being good neighbors by staying on public sidewalks, not parking in private lots and respecting residential property.

At the park we plan to have several speakers and music. Close to 10:30 the march will step off towards the capitol.

Rally at the Capitol

At the capitol we will have a line up of about a dozen speakers. The actual speakers will be announced separately and we are excited not only about the variety of messages, but the significance and caliber of the invited speakers. We expect to have spoken word performances, but no live music. Mostly this decision due to respecting the cold temperatures and keeping the time limited. It also allows us to lower cost through less equipment to rent.

Transportation: Let’s Get You There

Transit

METRO Green Line has four convenient stations serving the Western Sculpture Park and the Capitol Complex: Western Avenue, Capitol/Rice Street, Robert Street and 10th Street stations.

There are also several bus routes that serve the area, plan your trip using the helpful tools at www.metrotransit.org or call the Transit Information Center at 612.373.3333 and they can design a route tailored to your transportation needs.

Public Parking

Do something good for the environment and remember to carpool with your friends and family who are also attending the march/rally. There are a number of public parking options for those visiting the State Capitol Complex. A blue "P" symbol indicates available public parking space in lots and ramps. Parking maps can be found on the State of Minnesota's website and includes parking information for those with disabilities and bike parking information:

https://mn.gov/admin/citizen/buildings-grounds/parking/

Please note that several lots closest to the capitol will not be available for general parking. You may want to plan to park a bit away and walk to the event.

Ridesharing Drop-off/Pick-up Locations

Rideshare app-based ride services, such as Lyft and Uber, have designated drop-off and pick-up points located near the start of the march and near the state Capitol Complex. See map for locations.

Drop-off: Western border of Western Sculpture Park near the intersection of Fuller Avenue and Farmington Street

Pick-up: State parking Lot Q, located one block north of University Avenue at Cedar St and Sherburne Ave.

Charter, School and Minibus Parking

For those marchers chartering coach, school or mini-buses, we can help you with passenger drop-off, bus parking and passenger pick-up, contact Julie at baumeisterbaker@gmail.com to coordinate your bus parking needs before January 14.

Accessibility transportation

An ADA drop-off/pick-up area is located near Cedar Street and Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard at the Aurora Promenade.

State Parking Lot “L” located on the east side of the Judicial Center (25 Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard) will have 25 wheelchair accessible vehicle parking spots on a first come, first served basis. Additional public disability parking is available throughout the Capitol Complex. For more information: https://mn.gov/admin/citizen/buildings-grounds/parking/

Accessibility For All

ASL at the Womens March, 2019. Includes information on parking, accessibility area, drop-off area, and march route.

Accessibility is a key to ensuring all community members are able to participate in this great event. Here are a couple key things to know:

  • An ADA section will be located directly in front of the stage and will be open to those who require it. If you are an able-bodied person accompanying someone who needs accessible seating, we will do our best to accommodate you, but please be willing to give up your seat to someone who has greater physical need.

  • American Sign Language interpretation will be provided on stage.

  • An ADA drop-off/pick-up area is located near Cedar Street and Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard at the Aurora Promenade.

  • There will be ADA accessible porta-potties available at the Sculpture Park and at the Capitol.

  • State Parking Lot “L” located on the east side of the Judicial Center (25 Rev.

Landfill Reduction: No Time For Trash

To show our commitment to the environment, Women’s Wave MN is striving for a zero-waste event. If you bring it, please remove it and recycle/compost. There are no trash receptacles available at the rally site, along the march route or at the Capitol.

Pets: We Love Them and Let’s Keep Them Safe

To make this a safe event for all participants and for your pet’s safety, please leave pets at home. We love pets but with big crowds, noise and Minnesota weather, this may be a challenging environment for them and not all cultures have the same comfort level with animals.

We welcome licensed service animals.

Weather: Nobody Controls Mother Nature

This is Minnesota, in January, and nobody controls Mother Nature. Dress for the weather and wear appropriate footwear allowing you to stay warm and dry for up to 3 hours. Please also consider that will we be on grass/snow and what footwear is best suited for slippery, snowy conditions. There will not be warming tents, but the Capitol will be open.

Food/Beverage

There will be no food/beverage vendors at the rally site, along the march route or at the Capitol. Please bring your own snacks and non-alcoholic beverages to keep you going for the event. Better yet, stop by a locally-owned restaurant and spread the love!

Comfort

Porta-potties

ADA accessible porta-potties will be available at the pre-rally site at Western Sculpture park and at the Capitol rally site. The Capitol will also be open.

Safety

This is a non-violent event for which everyone is welcome. There could be counter-protestors. We strongly advise that you ignore them. If you engage with them you feed their energy.

The roads will be blocked and marshals will be available to assist where needed. That said, your attendance is your decision.

Pink Hats

The pink march hat became iconic of women's march through a separate initiative that became viral. Simultaneously, it became a symbol indicating "membership" in the women's progressive movement as it was criticized by women of color and trans women as being a symbol that was exclusive. The pink hats did not, in all its meanings, represent them or their anatomy.

We could argue that it wasn't meant to exclude, that it was a fun symbol meant to be inclusive. Instead, we are choosing to listen and to honor the opinion of those affected and offended. We choose NOT to wear the old pink march hats. Instead, Planned Parenthood will be giving away hats branded with their logo and Women’s March Minnesota will be selling branded hats, scarves, shirts, sweatshirts, and buttons.
