Actions to take NOW to support Reproductive Rights

You really showed up, MN! Thank you to the 10,000 who marched with us in Minneapolis on October 2, 2021 for Bans Off Our Bodies: March for Reproductive Freedom. Amazing! Now imagine if each of us took one or two more actions to remind policymakers that while the minority is loud, the majority of US residents overwhelmingly support reproductive freedom. Let’s continue to show up and be louder

Actions to take NOW to support Reproductive Rights

National Actions

  • The Women’s Health Protection Act (HR 3755) protects the right to access abortion care throughout the US. This bill passed in the US House (208:211) on September 24. MN US Reps McCollum, Omar, Craig and Phillips were co-sponsors. Now it’s in the Senate. Both Senators Klobuchar and Smith are co-sponsors.
ACTION: Thank Sen. Klobuchar and Sen. Smith for co-sponsoring this bill and ask them to do everything they can to get this bill passed. Learn more.
ACTION: Contact friends and family in other states, particularly in states with more moderate Democratic Senators or Republican Senators, and encourage them to let their Senators know why they want them to pass the WHPA. (Learn more about WHPA.)

  • Women’s March Foundation is calling on President Biden and Vice President Harris to bring gender parity to the Supreme Court. All genders must be equally represented in the highest court in the land to defend the fundamental rights of everyone. The Biden Administration must work with Congress to create a comprehensive plan to bring gender parity to the Supreme Court.
ACTION: Send a message through their petition-type website. While this site focuses on binary, we encourage our members to craft their own gender-inclusive message when completing this action.

  • NY Magazine recently covered organizations fighting for abortion access in Texas.
ACTION: Please consider a donation to one or more. (The article was written over a month ago, so confirm that your chosen orgs are still operating before you send them money.)

Minnesota Actions

  • The Protect Reproductive Options Act (PRO Act) (HF259/SF731), authored by MN state Rep. Morrison and Sen. McEwan, will protect Minnesotans’ right to contraception, the right to carry a pregnancy to term, and the right to abortion – free from interference by anti-abortion politicians who seek to enact or defend medically unnecessary barriers to comprehensive reproductive health care.
ACTION: The PRO Act was introduced in both the MN House and Senate this year but did not get a hearing in either. Let your MN state Rep and Senator know why you want them to pass this bill in the 2022 MN legislative session. (Find out who your MN state Rep. and Sen are.)

  • Last month the Reproductive Freedom Caucus was formed, made up of 55 MN state legislators, committed to stand up for, defend and work to expand reproductive rights in Minnesota. They will focus on crafting legislation to expand and protect abortion in MN, and promoting bills to broaden sex education, access to contraception and also end disparities in health outcomes for BIPOC women.  (Learn more.)
ACTION: Check to see if your MN state Rep and Senator is in the Reproductive Freedom Caucus. Thank them if they are, and ask them to join it if they aren’t.

  • Women Winning is a great organization that works to encourage, promote, support and elect pro-choice candidates regardless of party to all levels of public office. They track impact of national actions on Minnesotans and the MN policymakers in Minnesota who work for and against abortion rights. For example, they point out that since actions in Texas, State Rep. Tim Miller has promised that he will introduce a similar ban in Minnesota next session. And he is committed to introducing even more abortion restrictions in the future.
ACTION: Let’s combat this by making sure more pro-choice candidates get elected. Visit womenwinning.org to find and support pro-choice candidates in your local elections.

  • Our Justice Abortion Assistance Program. This program offers financial assistance and other resources for those who need help paying for an abortion in Minnesota. This includes abortion financial assistance, as well as lodging support and transportation stipends. For more details hope to donate
    ACTION: Please consider a donation.
