The People Put ICE On Trial
Tuesday, May 22nd at 7:30 A.M.
Whipple Federal Building
Ft. Snelling light rail station
Organized by the Minnesota Poor People’s Campaign

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operate like the gestapo. ICE functions outside the bounds of morality and legality. ICE chases people down as if they are hunting animals and they terrorize individuals, families and communities with impunity. Pregnant women, children recovering from surgery in hospitals, veterans who have served in the US military, fully protected DACA recipients, and even US citizens have been arrested and deported by ICE. ICE arrests people on private property without warrants, they torture immigrants with mental health issues by putting them in solitary confinement, families pay unjust fees just to communicate with their loved ones in ICE jails, and ICE has separated hundreds if not thousands of immigrant children from their parents at the border and all across the country. DHS is now promising to criminally prosecute immigrants and asylees who are fleeing violence in their countries, threatening to separate even more families. Every day brings another heinous attack against our immigrant sisters and brothers and we must resist those attacks.

Immigration judges are under the jurisdiction of and accountable to the U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S Attorney General’s office, which are part of the Executive branch. In other words, the immigration court system operates as a kangaroo court under the control of the President. Nationally, 70% of detained immigrants are held in for-profit prisons under contracts with the DHS. In Minnesota, several county jails serve as ICE jails. Both in Sherburne County, the largest ICE subcontracted jail in Minnesota, and at the Whipple Federal Building, the public has been denied access to see the facilities where immigrants are detained and processed, even though these buildings are publicly funded. Now, ICE wants to expand its criminal enterprise by building a new jail in Minnesota that would double or even triple the number of immigrants in ICE jails in our state. We have had enough. MIRAC and its allies demand:

Abolish ICE !
ICE out of Minnesota !
No more deportations !
Make Minnesota a sanctuary state !

ICE is out of control and must be stopped. We urge every Immigrant Welcoming, Sanctuary Supporting, Sanctuary congregation and Synagogue, and every person and organization who supports immigrants and their families to take urgent action and press these demands with us. Please join us on May 22nd at 7:30am.

MIRAC is one of the lead organizations for the Minnesota Poor People's Campaign, a campaign that includes 40 days of rallies and actions against racism, militarism, poverty and ecological devastation. The campaign kick-off rally will be held on May 14th at 5pm at the state capitol. We hope you will join us.
