"A group of private citizens with no particular affiliation are organizing this event
We are standing in solidarity with Charlottesville, to honor the lives lost and those injured resisting the open hatred of white supremacy. Join us at sunset at Bde Maka Ska Park, also known as Lake Calhoun Park—a lake whose native name was once stripped from it to honor a prominent supporter of white supremacy. We will stand together as witness to our future goal of a fair and just society in which racism—both overt and systemic—no longer corrupts and influences us.
Rain or Shine, we will gather at sunset, 8:22pm, light candles or other similar light sources, and stand along the edge of the walking path, surrounding the lake with love and light. We encourage participants to talk to their neighbors, sing if they feel moved, or bring a melodic instrument to share a song of hope.
Please BYOL (Bring Your Own Lightsource) and consider bringing extra for those who are coming directly from work or other events. Camping lanterns or LED lights/candles/lanterns are excellent for a round-the-lake vigil.
Local organizations working to end racial disparities here in Minneapolis and Minnesota are very much welcome to attend and speak with event attendees about their work. Attendees are welcome and encouraged to volunteer with these local organizations. More details about which organizations will provided as information becomes available."
